WINDSCHATTEN

Windtracing at Minus20Degree
Art Performance in Flachau (AT)
January 2024
Wind tracing is a live performance piece based on three portable windsock installations that measures the velocity of the air flow created in three local winter activities, walking, sledding and skiing. Three specific winter activities were selected due to the variation in speed, as well as the popularity in the village, locals and tourists alike.
What role does the invisible “natural” force play in this alpine village shaped by both nature and humans? During the biennale of three days, each day there is a participatory live performance featuring the artists employing the wind socks to visualise the air currents. Following the artists’ demonstration, the audience are invited to experience the installation themselves in their own ways.
By exploiting naturally-occurring and human-made air currents in a sculptural way, the artists investigate the subtle balance between air movements of different natures in Flachau, which calls for further reflections on the tension between the village’s socio-cultural and geographical landscape.
